Indie & Student program offers free access to the full Gamesparks platform to small indies and students – with fees only applying if a game reaches 100,000 monthly active users

Ireland, March 10, 2016 – Gamesparks, the Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) platform for game developers, has launched a free version of its platform for Indie developers and students. The indie and student program is aimed at enabling tiny independent developers, students, academics and hobbyist developers to include essential backend services such as player management, social integration, multiplayer and other tools. The aim of the scheme is to give smaller developers and people in academia access to the same tools as big commercial publishers, allowing them to experiment without the upfront financial investment that’s normally required.

“We want to give something back to the gaming community,” said Griff Parry, CEO of Gamesparks. “Even though it’s a multi-billion dollar industry,at it’s heart it still relies on the passion and enthusiasm of gamers who often start out coding at home before making a career out of game development. By giving everyone access to our platform we hope to do our bit to democratize the industry, and hopefully support the superstar developers of tomorrow.”

GameSparks is the leading Backend-as-a-Service platform for the games industry, trusted by leading names such as Ubisoft, Square Enix, Capcom, 505 Games, Bandai Namco and many others. It’s a cloud-based platform which allows developers to build all the server-side components of their games and then manage as a server post-launch. Popular features include Player Management, Social, Multiplayer, Economies and Catalogue Management and Meta-Game systems, and more than 71 million gamers regularly play games running on Gamesparks.

Anyone can apply to join the program as long as they can prove they are either:

    • A professional indie game developer with a team of 3 or fewer
    • A student enrolled on a games-related course
    • Academic staff linked to a games-related course
    • A hobbyist games developer

Developers on the program get unrestricted access to all features of the GameSparks platform. The only point at which there would be any cost is if a game launched using the platform achieves more than 100,000 MAU (Monthly Active Users). If that happens developers are charged 2¢ per MAU per month for every player above the 100,000 threshold – meaning that it’s completely free unless a game becomes a commercial hit.

Developers can sign-up to the program at:
